No data transfer after OS crash (power outage)(Read 11706 times)
No data transfer after OS crash (power outage) on: August 19, 2008, 02:43:24 PM
We are using Eltima VSP OEM ActiveX v4.5.3.73 in our software product and it performs pretty good. Mostly used OS is Win XP.

Recently we found out, that after a OS crash (ungracefully shutdown because of a power outage) the previously used COM ports can be reopened, but no more data is transferred over it.
After defining new COM ports (other numbers), everything is working again.

May there be any files or registry entries, which are created during runtime and normally removed at COM port closing or machine shutdown?
Can these files or registry entries, being not removed because of ungracefully shutdown, prevent the COM port to operate after the machine has started again?

I would be glad if there exists a simple workaround, like "delete file(s) x,y,z if they exist at boot time".

Hello,

We are ready to help you and willing to do so very much. I kindly ask you to be more specific. What you mean exactly by “the previously used COM ports can be reopened”. Please note that the COM ports are not created automatically after system reboot by Virtual Serial Port ActiveX Control. Does your application create the COM ports during launching? Let us know whether the COM ports appear in the Device Manager.
Please describe in more details what happens after system reboot.

Ok, I try to describe more detailed.

Our app creates a number of VCOMs (e.g. 3) at startup, using always the same port numbers. When closed, our app cleans up and removes those VCOMs properly.
If a machine crash occurs, obviously no cleanup is possible and maybe used temporary files, registry entries or whatever can't be disposed of properly and will survive a system reboot and the following launch of our app.

After such an ungracefully shutdown and start of our app, the VCOMs are created successfully and visible in Device Manager. They can be opened by other applications (e.g. Hyperterminal) successfully.
The problem symptom is, that no data is received, despite of all successfull operations so far. The VCOMs are present, but deaf and dumb, if you want to say so.

I regret to say that we were not able to reproduce the problem you described. Please send us your application for tests to mailto:support@eltima.com Also, please provide us with instructions how to reproduce the problem. Try to be more explicit describing the problem which will help our technicians to perceive the situation.

We decided to buy the upgrade to the latest release of VSP ActiveX OEM.
Now we will see if the case is still present with this release.
